Dreamgirls soundtrack

The Deluxe Edition of Dreamgirls features performances by Beyoncé Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, and Eddie Murphy. It includes a 2 CD-set with a total of 36 songs, as well as a 36-page lyric and photo booklet.

The main question surrounding this soundtrack is how Jennifer Hudson is doing, particularly with her rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." In my opinion, she doesn't surpass the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday, or even Lillias White from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. However, Hudson doesn't shy away from giving her all, transforming into a total diva and building the song up to an unstoppable crescendo.

On the other hand, Beyoncé adapts to the 1960s and 1970s-inspired material with great skill. However, her ballad "Listen," which also appears on her own B'day album, lacks the spirit present in the classic tunes on this album. It's important to note that this album is filled with hard-hitting, high-octane music that outshines most contemporary R&B albums in its urgency and passion.

When Hudson and Beyoncé face off in "It's All Over," or when the ballad "One Night Only" is transformed into the dance-floor hit "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy emanating from the speakers is electrifying. The Deluxe Edition of this album also includes a larger booklet and additional tracks, such as dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience."
